Ambassador: EU carbon regulation not to discriminate Russia

MOSCOW, Oct 13 (PRIME) – The E.U. planned carbon regulation will not discriminate Russia because it will comprise unified norms, E.U. ambassador to Russia Markus Ederer said on Wednesday during the Russian Energy Week forum.

The carbon border adjustment mechanism that the union plans to introduce is not a tariff, he said.

“I heard that the Russian colleagues call it a tax, but it is not a tax. It will be an obligation to buy carbon certificates through a non-discriminatory way because the competitors from Europe will also have to buy the certificates for carbon-intensive products,” Ederer said.

Moscow and Brussels have already started discussions of the topic at various levels, and the negotiations at the highest level will definitely happen in the future, he said.
